Welcome to San Fermo, a gem nestled in Ballard, Seattle, where authentic Italian cuisine meets exceptional service. Located at 5341 Ballard Ave NW, this restaurant has quickly become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. With a dynamic rotating menu, San Fermo ensures that there's always something new to sample while retaining traditional favorites that resonate with true Italian heart and soul.
As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped by the warm ambiance—a perfect blend of cozy intimacy and vibrant energy. Each customer is treated to a thoughtfully curated dining experience that celebrates the best of seasonal ingredients and handmade pasta, making every visit feel like a special occasion. The staff is not just friendly but genuinely passionate about the dishes they serve, ensuring that guests feel right at home.
Listening to patrons like Karen Hartman, who describes San Fermo as "our go-to spot for a great dinner," highlights the restaurant's commitment to excellence. The rotating offerings are a culinary delight, encouraging adventurous palates to explore while still cherishing beloved classics. This balance is crucial to mastering the fine art of Italian dining.
Another guest, Conner Crowe, shared an unforgettable experience featuring the remarkable bread with charred sweet onion, reminiscent of a beloved French onion soup, followed by rich bolognese and delightful gnocchi. Each dish was prepared with care, ensuring an explosion of flavors that left him eager for a return visit.
Among the must-try dishes, the burrata stands out, as noted by Vee Touchet. With its creamy texture and simple, elevated preparation, it’s a dish that lingers in the memory long after the meal. Fresh, homemade noodles in their pasta dishes capture a level of authenticity that feels both nostalgic and innovative, making this a true sanctuary for Italian food lovers.
Service is exceptional at San Fermo. Many guests, like Abby Sreshta, rave about the knowledgeable and attentive staff, enhancing the overall dining experience. Celebrating moments like birthdays becomes unforgettable, with special touches that include complimentary drinks and personalized recommendations from dedicated servers.
To fully enjoy the experience, consider making a reservation, especially if you wish to savor the intimate space in the aptly named attic. As Emma Inge highlighted, dining there with a group creates a unique atmosphere where time feels suspended, allowing each course to be enjoyed at its own pace.
In conclusion, San Fermo is not just a dining destination; it’s a celebration of Italian culture and warmth. Every dish is a testament to culinary craftsmanship, and every visit is an invitation to indulge in a world of flavors. Whether you’re seeking a cozy dinner for two or a lively gathering with friends, San Fermo promises an unforgettable experience that leaves you craving more.

Our go-to spot Ballard for a great dinner. Staff is outstanding and food incredible. Love the rotating menu. Always something new to try but they hang onto their classic dishes. Impossible to have bad meal here.
Can’t rate this place highly enough. One of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Seattle. Josie our server recommended all of the dishes we tried and every single one of them was amazing. We had the bread with charred sweet onion to start, combo that tasted like French onion soup. And then the bolognese and gnocchi, both delicious options. We ended with a gianduja butter cake which was the perfect “not too sweet” dessert. We will definitely be back for more seasonally specific dishes.
This was the best restaurant we ate at during our trip to Seattle. The burrata is a must try for sure! The pastas were super fresh and the homemade noodles were such a treat. I went to celebrate my 21st bday with my friend, and our waiter, Anna, made our dinner so special. Her recommendations never led us astray, and we tried so many new things thanks to her. I would definitely recommend this place for a nice Italian dinner, and to dine with Anna for a top notch experience!
Loved this place! Our server’s name was Anna H, she was great and was very knowledgeable about the food. We went for a birthday dinner and made a reservation beforehand, the ambience was great and the food even better. We got ended up getting free drinks and shots for my friend’s birthday. Overall was amazing and it was one of our favorite memories from Seattle!!
Stellar atmosphere and weight staff! Went as a group of 5 and sat in the attic which was a cozy and intimate eating experience. We were told to order everything at once, letting food/drinks to be paced out perfectly. Didn’t feel rushed at all! They have a great wine and rotating menu selection. The cavatelli duck was definitely my favorite! Note that you may have more success getting a table by placing a reservation or arriving pretty early for a walk up.
Great hidden gem. I have lived in Ballard for 3 years now and I finally made it to dinner at San fermo for a birthday. I have to say it is a little pricey, but we were there for a special occasion so did not mind. We sat outside on the patio. We each had a cocktail, the baguette and appetizer and a pasta. Everything was delicious.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR SAN FERMO'S SUMMER SERIES FARM DINNERS IN LA CONNER AT SWAN HOUSE FARM ... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! (Posting this here to try and get their farm dinner more exposure because it is truly amazing) We did the summer series farm dinner. It was gorgeous beyond words. A once in a lifetime experience. Feels like going to someone's magical outdoor wedding in an enchanted garden. One of the most beautiful Washington experiences I've had-- and I've done a lot! Also stay at the Pleasant Ridge Bed & Breakfast less than a mile up the road. We walked to and from the dinner to our bed & breakfast, it was absolutely surreal and I'll be returning to relive this experience. Also, they made me a lactose free version of every single dish! I wasn't just being served completely different dishes to accommodate me (which totally would have been okay too)... but that is above and beyond.
This will forever be my favorite Italian restaurant. They rotate the menu to showcase seasonal foods and meat from nearby farms, but always have ingredients on hand for some Italian classics. Each time we’ve eaten here we have been treated like we own the restaurant, instead of just being semi-regulars. I have two allergies, both of which show up quite often on their menu, but they always go above and beyond to cater to my needs. It’s not a requirement by any means, but it’s always so touching when they do. Bring back the chestnut cake from Winter, 2023 please. It was such a sleeper dessert, I fear not enough people have had the luxury of trying it.
